The ranch is located on 160 acres, much of that good bottomland. Along
with lush pastures the ranch has hundreds of mature native pecan trees.
The native pecan produces a smaller nut that is very heavy for its size
with a high oil content making it very flavorful. Great to eat right from
your hand or use in baking or candy making.
Each native tree is different so the shape, size and taste of nuts can
differ. Harvesting is done in late fall and thru the early winter. Keeping a
pecan orchard in production requires many man hours of keeping the
orchard floor cleaned up for harvest time. Harvest can be done by hand
by simply waiting until the nuts fall after a few good frosts. With a large
orchard it is more common to use machines to harvest. A tree shaker
causes the nuts to fall to the ground where another unit sweeps them up.
In the past we have not used any chemical sprays on the trees here and
we will continue to try that route as long as dangerous pests do not
threaten the trees or production. Should we need to spray every effort
will be made to use the safest sprays possible.
There are just a few pounds of the 2007 harvest available. These are
packaged in 1 gal zip top bags and are "cracked and blown". This means
that the shells have been mechanically crushed and much of the shell
has been blown out leaving nuts with some shell behind.
Price on the 2007 harvest:
$3.00 / 1 gal bag (approx 1 lb)
plus shipping. We can get 7 bags in a US Post Office flat rate priority box.
