Young foals are easiest handled when they are still at their dams side but the reality is that doesn't always happen. Weanlings, yearlings and even 2 year olds that have not been previously handled can be trained.
Confidence and respect are both needed for colts to handle the new experiences they will be exposed to in their lifetime.
The term halter breaking means different things to different people. To me it is more than just getting a halter on and dragging a horse around.
Younsters will learn:
To be caught and haltered in the round pen, understand how to give to pressure both on the lead and from body language of the handler, to have all body parts handled, pick up feet, not be afraid of lead rope and lariat rope, load in a stock trailer, walk over things like plastic and plywood, be groomed.
These things take time so expect your colt/ filly to remain at the ranch at least 30 days. Some youngsters will learn quicker than others.
Horses are worked 5 days a week, depending on weather horses usually get Wednesday and Sunday off. Horses that can't be haltered can be unloaded into a round pen and will remain there until they can be haltered and led.
